Learning to Do Your Own Bookkeeping: An Introduction

New Year's resolutions come in all sorts of categories. Some people want to start excercising more, and others want to spend more time on their favourite pasttime.

In my line of work, however, there's one major resolution I hear from the people who contact me.

I want to get my bookkeeping organized this year.

Sometimes that gets solved by handing everything to a bookkeeper and letting them handle it for you. If you're already very busy, or simply have no desire to do your own bookkeeping, that's a great solution. Outsource the work to a professional, and spend that time on the parts of your business that you excel at.

While that is a good solution, it doesn't make for a very interesting blog post, does it? It definitely doesn't make sense for me to fill the year with posts about hiring me to handle your bookkeeping.

In 2014, I'm going to focus my writing on helping those who want to do this themselves. And, more specifically, those who want to start doing their bookkeeping online. Whether you are just getting started, you are an owner who wants to move the books online, or even a fellow bookkeeper who wants to move your client work to the cloud, you're going to find information that will help you along the way.

In January, I'm going to be discussing some of the steps to getting started. We'll talk about what software and services to choose, how to move your current information to your service of choice, and what information to capture along the way.

This is a lot of information to cover, and we won't get through everything in one month. The goal here is to get you thinking about and (more importantly) acting on these goals you have to get organized this year.

Is this one of your resolutions? Do you have topics you'd like me to cover?

If there is something you'd like to learn about let me know. I have some topics I'd like to cover but I want to make sure you're getting the information you need. Let me know in the comments, or email me directly if you'd like to suggest a topic or ask a question.

Finally, if this is a subject you're interested in, please sign up for my email newsletter. You'll get every post delivered straight to your inbox, and you'll also get access to some information that won't show up on the site.
